CE6111 – Civil Engineering Design
This module encourages students to make use of and develop material studied in other modules, applying engineering judgement in order to carry out a realistic engineering design. The module includes a group assignment in which students will work together to prepare a design in accordance with the brief provided. Lectures will specifically address the issues raised in the design brief and may involve speakers from different disciplines within the Faculty, as well as invited specialist professional lectures, for example, from the Industrial Advisory Board. The individual activities within this module will comprise reports on a relevant professional meeting and a personal statement reflecting on the student’s role within the design group. These activities fulfil several functions: to continue to develop students’ academic and communication skills, to increase awareness of the role of the civil engineer in design and construction issues, to encourage students to attend professional meetings, to appreciate effective team working and to enhance the student’s employability.
CE6012-Sustainable Infrastructure and Environment
This is a core module for BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering Course. The module has been formulated to broaden the students’ perspective on the infrastructure that underpins a developed society and the role of the civil engineer in its design, construction, maintenance and management. The requirement for sustainable solutions will be emphasized throughout the module, considering the influencing environmental, economic, social and political factors. A global perspective will be introduced by considering case studies throughout the world and discussing the different factors that influence the infrastructure. Graduate employment opportunities will be outlined in the various sectors, reinforced by guest lecturers from expert practitioners/researchers and relevant site visits. The module will consider the broad range of infrastructure with a focus on transportation and water, opening up career path opportunities for graduates.
CE6113 – Building and Environmental Engineering –
This level 6 module for the final year of BSc Civil Engineering builds upon curriculum taken in level 4 and level 5. The main aims are to provide a detailed appreciation of construction processes and techniques, the design and integration of building and environmental services, the performance requirements of the building envelope, and the integration of these various factors into a cost-effective building design. The lecture content promotes the benefits of holistic building design and construction that gives due consideration to the performance of the building envelope, the design and integration of mechanical and electrical installations (building services) to provide internal environmental quality and the management of buildings over the course of their life cycle.
CE6014 – Individual Project and Research Methods
The individual project is an opportunity to explore a subject of the student’s own choice and to initiate, design and execute a small scale research project under supervision. The work in the project will draw upon material from all modules previously or currently taught and provide a culmination to their degree. Additionally, this allows the students to develop and practice their research skills that will be invaluable for the future. The students are encouraged to work independently, study a topic in depth, review previous work, collect, and interpret and analyse information. This is also intended to develop students’ ability to communicate clearly and succinctly orally, graphically and in writing. In undertaking the work they should demonstrate knowledge and competence in reviewing literature and in using one or more of a range of research methods to collect and analyze data and draw well-founded conclusions. To support the student a series of lectures in research methods is given and individual one-to-one supervision ensures that the student is supported in the process. Assessment is by submission of an initial formative research statement and summative assessments comprise an interim report, an oral presentation and the completed project.
